Sleep Dentistry – Inhalation Sedation in Bowen Hills

Dental phobia should never stop you from visiting the dentist. Preventative dentistry is important to keep your teeth and gums healthy and avoid even more financially and physically painful problems in the future.

At Showground Dental, we offer inhalation sedation for our more nervous patients in Bowen Hill. Whether you’re a nervous adult or child, we can make your visit with us as comfortable as possible.

About Happy Gas

Inhalation sedation makes use of N2O-O2, commonly known as happy gas. This is a gas that you can breathe in for safe sedation purposes. It has no colour, odour or irritating properties. It is used in dentistry to kill pain and induce a pleasurable, euphoric feeling that spreads through your body. It may even cause you to laugh, which is where it gets its name.

In order to keep this form of inhalation sedation safe, it is mixed with at least 30% oxygen.

How is it Used at the Dentist?

The mix of N2O-O2 is fed through a tube to a nasal hood, which is put over your nose. Once attached, all you have to do is breathe normally through your nose.

The effect will start in less than 15 minutes, putting you completely at ease. Our dentists will adjust the depth of the sedation and the sedative effects can be quickly decreased at the end of the treatment. Recovery time is usually only a few minutes.

Other than happy gas, we can also offer Penthrox or pre-medication if required.

Benefits of Inhalation Sedation

This form of sedation is a great way to help nervous patients endure treatment, but there are also a few other benefits:

  • Happy gas works rapidly – the relaxation and pain killing properties take effect after 2-3 minutes.
  • The depth of sedation can be altered from moment to moment.
  • Sedation can be given for the exact time it’s needed for.
  • There is no “hangover effect” – gas is eliminated from the body within 5 minutes.
